The following is the story of a book available at Ben's Mill. It was written by Sue Tester and Beth Kanell. Sue Tester was a 3rd grade school teacher and taught one of Beth's kids. Sue has a son who has been deaf since birth. As a result of this, she put ASL (American Sign Language) into her curriculum and all her students had to learn some sign language. Beth, after spending many hours at the mill, realized that you can still know what is happening at the mill without hearing, just from the vibrations. She decided a book must be written about a child named Charlie, who would become familiar with the happenings at the mill by feel.  Beth and Sue got together and created the book called "Charlie's Place".  After the passing of Hiram Allen, Beth contacted Preservation

Trust of Vermont. They paid for the publishing of the book and

dedicated it to Hiram. This delightful book can be purchased for $10 at the mill or by contacting Bob Gibson at BEN'S MILL LTD; PO BOX 50: BARNET, VT 05821 (or following the directions above). All proceeds go towards the restoration of the mill.

We would like to thank Sue and Beth for their dedication to the mill and for writing this great story.

Lois Allen
